So you want to crochet something. First, you'll need three things: a hook, some yarn, and an idea of what you'd like to make. Take a look around this wiki for information on all three, and don't hesitate to ask questions! Keep in mind that good questions get good answers. A post like "how do I crochet" will probably be met with some frustration, since that's a big open-ended question with many possible answers. A better question might be "I'd like to start out with a dishcloth, I'm using a size G hook and Lily Sugar n' Cream yarn, and this linked pattern, but my stitch counts are always wrong, any ideas?" Great question! We can tell you figured out the three things - hook, yarn, idea - and you're stuck. Now we're getting somewhere!
FAQ'sWhat's the difference between crochet and knitting? Crochet is done with one hook that keeps only one "live" stitch going at a time, while knitting is (basically) done with two needles and keeps many "live" stitches on the needles - it can get more complicated from there, of course. The two techniques result in two different types of fabric; they are not just two different ways of making the same thing, so there is no translating between a crochet pattern and a knitting pattern. There are techniques and crafts that come close to being a bridge between the two - see references to Tunisian crochet, for example. What kind of hook should I get? There are several things to consider: shape, material, and size. Like any skill or hobby, crochet has a set of tools and each crocheter will have their preferred toolset. Each brand has a particular shape, and avid crocheters have claimed loyalty to one shape or another. Starting out just get something cheap until you figure out what you like. Boye and Bates are the two mainstream brands, but there are lots of specialty brands, too. If you have trouble with hand or wrist pain you'll want to look into brands with thicker and/or softer handles. Hooks are usually made out of aluminum, wood (bamboo is popular), or acrylic. Again, there is no right or wrong answer, just try something. Aluminum tends to be easier at the beginning when you're learning how to loosen your stitches and slide your yarn easily. When it comes to size, no crocheter only works with one size - we all have a full set because some projects will require smaller or larger hooks than other projects. Starting out a good generic set of a few mid-range sizes (like G, H, I) will work. You'll expand your collection later. Size G? Huh?? Crochet hooks are sized like women's pants - confusingly. You might see a pattern that calls for a size E hook, or a size 5 hook or a pattern asking for a 3.5mm hook. Turns out those are the same thing. Thankfully most brands label the hooks with all size identifiers, so you should be ok. It's always safer to follow the mm size if you're not sure - it's not common, but the same letter in different brands might mean different things. The Craft Yarn Council of America, and industry trade association, has formulated standard crochet hook and knitting needle sizes in order to regularize domestic United States sizing for these tools. Its goal is to encourage consistent manufacture and labeling of crochet and knitting tools around metric measurements. This is a tapestry currently in possession of the Volksen family in northern Nibenay, a branch of the Volk imperial family tree. It was commissioned by Emperor Wulf Volklsen for his ancestral estate in Burma and made by the famous Dragon Elf artist Multidimensional in 2a668. While Ruvaak'Se'Brom was not an unusual subject, it was his depiction as a human that was considered somewhat odd. Most see to show the glory of the Dragon Elves and their power. Counts, Jarls and other nobles often displayed DovahFahliil artwork as a statement of their affiliation, or after the Odmi chronicles became popular it became a fashion. But Emperor Wulf Volksen specifically requested the depiction of Ruvaak as a man. Included is his staff Fen'Do'Jun, Will of Light, and the halo of the Nine Edicts. The tapestry was finished later that year and showcased at the Emperor's winter palace near Bruma on Fin'Saraan'Drog'Krongrah, a Dragon Elf holiday commemorating the death of Ruvaak'Se'Brom, the first Dragonlord. It coincides with The Day of Sundered Victory, the imperial holiday celebrating the defeat of the Boethian Host. Brii'Se'Brom, the second and current dragonlord, was invited to the palace as an honored guest during the holiday. It is said she and the emperor shared a conversation concerning the tapestry, it's exact nature is unknown. It is said that whenever the emperor visited the palace, he would spend each morning staring at the tapestry, it is said he was questioned about it by a visiting dignitary, though the validity of the interaction is often challenged. The emperor is said "He challenged everything, and everyone. Fighting for everything he ever had from beginning to end. I know the feeling." Emperor Wulf Volksen was of coarse the eventual winner of the Crown Wars and sponsor of the Three Fold Agreement, Covenant, and first sworn on the Oath Stone. Earlier this year we have gathered a collection of the most beautiful 101 DIY pallet projects to take on, providing you with what be believe to be useful inspirational information for future DIY projects. Today we have focused our attention to recycled pallet bed frames, a topic commonly encountered and of high interest among fellow drafters. Pallet wood is an infinite resource, filled with creative possibility and multiple functions. The number of pallet projects or areas where pallet wood proves to be useful grows larger with each passing day, filling in blanks left in the furniture industry and being re-adapted, reinterpreted and beautified in creative, imaginative ways. Whether we are talking about recycled pallet bed frames, outdoors patio furniture, pallet coffee tables, raised garden beds and so on, pallet wood is and should be recycled and up-cycled on a daily basis.
“A pallet , sometimes inaccurately called a skid (a skid has no bottom deck boards), is a flat transport structure that supports goods in a stable fashion while being lifted by a forklift, pallet jack, front loader, work saver, or other jacking device, or a crane. A pallet is the structural foundation of a unit load which allows handling and storage efficiencies. Goods or shipping containers are often placed on a pallet secured with strapping, stretch wrap orshrink wrap and shipped. Since its invention in the twentieth century, its use has dramatically supplanted older forms of crating like the wooden box and the wooden barrel, as it works well with modern packaging like cardboard boxes and Intermodal containers commonly used for bulk shipping. While most pallets are wooden, pallets can also be made of plastic, metal, paper, and recycled materials. Each material has advantages and disadvantages relative to the others.” The advantages of using the beautiful material of pallet wood are numerous: they are very easy to find , with healthy strong wood and sturdy structure, rather cheap, which makes them a wonderful alternative to other store available materials, not to mention the actual beauty of the wood, its intricate complex texture evoking the natural environment with all its small perfect imperfections, raw texture and multitude of varieties and tones.Pallets come in different sizes, offering numerous possibilities of interpretation and modification. They can be cut up to fir a tiny corner, the wood stripped and reused in creative projects, layered to form storing units or raised beds and so on. Imagination and patience is all that is required in the process. Left bare, in their raw shape, they would fit nay decor from the modern, contemporary ones where they will add a necessary contrast with other sleek pieces of furniture, to industrial raw environments where exposed brick walls and concrete floorings demand such a material to warm up the atmosphere. If chosen to be painted, pallets welcome neutral tones of white, beige, grey or even pastel tones that will fit perfectly a Scandinavian inspired decor.
